SUMMARY:A Conversation With Your Garden: Goethean Observation and Drawing
DESCRIPTION:  \nOh\, I who wish to grow\,
I look out\, and inside me the tree grows. \nRainer Maria Rilke \n  \n \nLearn to see your garden with new eyes and learn new drawing techniques! \n \nThese six online workshops uses the core stages of the phenomenological process of Goethean phenomenology using charcoal\, pastels\, shaded and dynamic drawing. \nSpring and Autumn are ideal times of year to turn our eyes to Nature to learn her secrets. The cycle of the plant is particularly on display to us\, as seed becomes leaf\, leaf becomes bud\, then flower turns to fruit and finally\, seeds return to the earth. (Of course\, any time of year in the garden is good\, but Spring and Autumn have particular qualities of change and transformation\, which are especially suited to observation and drawing.)  \nWhat will we do? \n Each workshop leads us through a process of becoming ‘at home’ with Nature\, using quiet contemplation\, careful observation\, mood immersion\, sketching and colour painting. \nParticipants keep a visual diary to document their discoveries and observations. \nBy getting up close with our garden in this way\, we learn to step more deeply into the cycles of life. \nWhat is Goethean phenomenology? \nGoethean phenomenology (also known as Goethean observation) helps us develops fresh\, new eyes for the world around us. It offers us another way of being in the world\, one that brings us into a more participatory connection with both Nature and ourselves and helps us develop new organs of perception. \n  \nPhenomenology is the way of the future! \n  \nWho is it for? \n\nFor anyone interested in knowing more about Goethean phenomenology and how to practice it.\nFor nature lovers who would like to learn a non-confrontational way of drawing plants.\nFor Steiner teachers\, artists\, art therapists and art students seeking to understand how the formative forces work in Nature\n\nSuitable for all levels. You do not need to be an experienced artist to enjoy these workshops. Video recordings included in the fee\, available for private study. \nWhen is it? \n5.00pm-6.30pm AEST\, Fortnightly Wednesdays 10 September – 19 November\, 2025 \nCost \n$225 AUD/ $145 USD\n$230 PD certificate\, conditions apply\nVideo recordings included in the fee\, available for private study. \nBook here \n  \nFind out more! \nContact Fiona Campbell at Painted Space Studio \n  \nFeature image: The Plant between the Sun and Earth by G.Adams and O. SUMMARY:The Michaelic Mystery: An Artistic Journey Exploring
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis masterclass in painting explores the nature and mission of Michael\, the Archangel of our age\, in connection with the human life and the seeds we plant for the future. . \nOur path of inquiry draws on Rudolf Steiner’s lectures on this theme\, starting with The Cycle Of The Year As A Breathing Process\, Lecture V and lectures from The Michael Mystery. \nWho is the course for? \n\nFor students of Anthroposophy who want to experience spiritual science through the arts\, knowing through doing.\n\nPainting skills and understanding of fundamental anthroposophic principles recommended to get the most out of this course. \nCost \n$280 AUD/$190 USD\nVideo recordings included in the fee\, available for private study. \nBookings \nWho is Michael ? \nMichael (pronounced Micha-el) is a higher being whose name means ‘who is like God’. He an archangel of Christian\, Judaic and Islamic religions and is often portrayed in art as slaying a dragon or Satan or with scales for weighing souls on the Day of Judgement. \nHe is said to inspire a cosmopolitan or world consciousness in us\, at a time when human beings are becoming more and more individualised and egocentric\, and our world more and more chaotic. His silent words provide a sure\, steady\, conscious pathway to bring our own spirit into harmony with World Spirit.  \nThinking as a Michaelic person has always to do with endeavouring to implant something of the spiritual into the wider cultural-scientific and social economic life of our time. \nFor more information \nContact Painted Space Studio \n  \nFeature image: Michael and the Dragon\, © Fiona Campbell 1999 \n  \nThe Michael age has dawned. Hearts begin to have thoughts. Enthusiasm no longer flows from mystical obscurity\, but from the inner clarity that thought conveys. To grasp this is to receive Michael into one’s soul. Thoughts that today seek to grasp the spirit must spring from hearts that beat for Michael as the fiery cosmic prince of thought.’  Rudolf Steiner \n

SUMMARY:Working with Composition: Bringing Ego Organisation into Painting
DESCRIPTION:  \nAn exploration of the role of composition in painting in relation to the ego or “I”as the organiser of our soul life\, through painting\, drawing and art history observation. The health-giving effects of working consciously with the principles of the fourfold human being underpins this studio course.  \nWhat is composition?\nHistorically\, artists have always drawn on the laws of perception to arrange the elements within a work of art\, to create balance\, focus\, unity or harmony in the work. This need for the visual ordering of colour\, line\, form and space is essential to our feelings of connection to or our aesthetic enjoyment of a work of art. But why is this so?  \n\nWhy do we experience harmonious peace in a Raphael Madonna yet also harmonious dynamism in a Turner stormy sea?  \n\nDo the elements of a work need to be arranged in a balanced compositional way to be aesthetically pleasing to the eye? Or can we also find satisfaction in chaos and unstructured movement? and what is happening within us when we experience this sense of enjoyment with a painting?  \nSimply\, what is the role of our “I” when creating or contemplating an art work? How do bring presence to our paintings? \nWhat will we do? \nIn this online course\, we explore the principles of composition and learn how to leverage these principles to bring the multiple elements of our painting together into unified wholeness. We learn how perception influences our ego organisation and our experience of harmony and balance when viewing both the great masters and our own work.  \nFirst\, we explore some classic laws of visual organisation\, such as the rule of thirds and the golden ratio\, by observing how these laws are inherent in famous artworks.  \nWe then learn how these principles relate to the role of our ego as organiser of our soul forces; then how to apply such principles to our own work. Thus\, the art work becomes a reflection of the activity of the ego on the fourfold human being\, according to the anthroposophic approach to painting.  \nThere is particular focus on the salutogenic effects of consciously working with ego organisation in painting. \nWho is it for? \nThis is a Schooling course but you are welcome to join us!  \n\nFor artists\, art therapists and art students looking to find a path of soul/spiritual development through the arts.\nFor anyone interested in an artistic understanding of the role of our higher self or I in visual composition. \n\nTo get the most out of this course\, it is anticipated participants will work on their own between the fortnightly sessions.  \nRequired: some familiarity with the anthroposophic approach to art and basic painting technique. Watercolour veiling/wet-on-dry skills are preferred.   \nPlease note: this is not a step-by-step instructional class so not advised for beginners in painting unless you are adventurous and self-motivated! \nWhat dates are the classes? \n3pm-5pm AEST Saturdays\n13 September-6 December 2025 \nThe workshops are recorded but live participation is preferred\, unless your time zone makes this impossible.  \nHow much does it cost? \n$300 for PD or for new participants.\n$280 for ongoing participants \nRecordings available post-course for private study.  \nHow do I book? \nBook here \nAfter registration\, participants will be sent the payment details and a list of suggested readings and materials.   \nThe Zoom workshop link is sent one (1) day before the class. \nFor more information \nPlease contact Fiona Campbell at Painted Space Studio \n  \nAbout the presenter \nFiona Campbell is the director of Painted Space Studio. She a researcher\, lecturer\, visual artist and arts educator. SUMMARY:Working with colour\, out of colour: a one-day painting intensive
DESCRIPTION:  \nA Painted Space Studio workshop\n  \n“A whole world opened and showed me colour as a living being.” \nGoethe \n  \nThis intensive workshop is a must for anyone who wishes to understand the role of colour in Steiner’ education and in Anthroposophy in general. \nIt introduces you to colour as an experience! We use the immersive wet-on-wet painting technique to help us transpose ourselves into the colour\, so that we can say: “I am blue’ or ‘I am at one with golden yellow’. This is an important process for understanding how to work with colour\, out of colour\, selflessly.   \nThe workshop provides you with basic watercolour painting skills and a grounding in Goethe’s Theory of Colour (which underlies the Steiner/Waldorf school curriculum for the visual arts). \nPainting ‘out of colour’ \nBut how do we paint ‘out of colour’ and not form? And how does this relate to the colours in nature\, in the sky\, the colours of the rainbow? To answer these questions\, we start with Goethe’s colour circle as our guide. By immersing ourselves into the colour circle as it moves from warm to cool\, light to dark\, heaven to earth and back\, we experience the full spectrum of colour  – and of ourselves.  \n\nWhy Goethe’s colour circle ? \nGoethe proposed a revolutionary method of approaching the phenomena of colour\, one which integrates the observer with the experience. Further\, Goethe was concerned with the qualities of colours\, which he called the ‘deeds and sufferings of the light’. By immersing our senses in each colour\, one by one\, we come to a deep\, intuitive relationship with them. This\, in turn\, connects us more strongly to colour in the world around us. \nWho is it for? \n\nFor Steiner (Waldorf) teachers who want to learn about colour to support their teaching practice (PD certificates available).\n\n\nFor anyone interested in learning to paint in the anthroposophic (Steiner) approach.\n\nThis short intensive also provides an introduction to the Art as a Path of Schooling for the Soul training. The Essence of Anthroposophic Art: Veiling the Colours follows on from this course\, a further exploration of Goethe’s Theory of Colour but introducing the wet-on-dry watercolour painting technique. \nWhen is it? \n3.30pm-8pm AEDT\, Saturday 21 February 2026 \nCost \n$150 AUD\n$160 AUD for PD certificate\nVideo recordings and readings included in the fee\, available for private study.\nYou will be sent the payment details and a list of suggested materials after booking. The Zoom link is sent one (1) day before the workshop begins. \nBookings \nBook here!\n  \n  \nFor more information \nContact Fiona Campbell \n\n  \nFeature image: Goethe’s symmetric colour wheel with associated symbolic qualities (1809) \n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:A Conversation With Your Garden (Autumn): Goethean Observation and Drawing
DESCRIPTION: \nPainted Space Studio presents\n  \n\nOh\, I who wish to grow\,
I look out\, and inside me the tree grows. \nRainer Maria Rilke 1914 \n\n \nImmersing ourselves in Nature as She turns inward … \nAutumn is the wonderful time of year to turn our eyes to the changes Nature brings to the garden: the reds and golds of European trees\, the bounty of fruits and late vegetables\, all mixed in with the evergreens and native plants following their own local seasonal changes. \nWhether you have your own garden or like to walk in a local park\, a nature reserve or even just tend a few pot plants on your balcony\, being with plants in their endless cycles of becoming and dying away is both energising and de-stressing for us. A health-giving counterblance to computer work! \nUsing Goethean phenomenology to guide us\, these six online workshops will help you to become more ‘at home’ with nature. \nThe six workshops use mixed media and different drawing techniques to take us through this process. Techniques include charcoal\, pencil\, paint and pastel. Participants keep a visual diary to document their discoveries and observations. \nWhat is Goethean phenomenology? \nGoethean phenomenology (also known as Goethean observation) helps us develops fresh\, new eyes for seeing and engaging with the world around us. It brings us into a more participatory connection with both nature and ourselves. \nWho is it for? \n\n	For anyone interested in knowing more about Goethean phenomenology and how to practice it.\n	For nature lovers who would like to learn a non-confrontational way of drawing plants.\n	For Steiner teachers\, artists\, art therapists and art students seeking to understand how the formative forces work in Nature\n\nSuitable for all levels. SUMMARY:The Essence of Anthroposophic Art: Veiling the Colours
DESCRIPTION:A Painted Space Studio workshop\n  \nIf I delve deeper into the characters of the different colours\, they show me their dynamic qualities. Out my experience\, I can then let the colours guide me. \n  \nBeppe Assenza \n  \nThis course introduces the iconic veil painting technique so closely identified with Rudolf Steiner’s artistic approach. \nWe delve into the language of colour using transparent surfaces of liquid colour in free compositions inspired by Beppe Assenza’s playful but meditative approach to painting. \nThis is the preferred technique of any anthroposophic painting training. It is not an easy skill to develop but very satisfying to master. \nRudolf Steiner developed this technique as a way of of interfacing with the spirit through painting.  \nYou can read more about the anthroposophic approach and why we prefer watercolour over acrylics and oils in this short article. \nWho is it for? \n\nFor anyone interested in learning the veiling (wet-on-dry) watercolour technique.\nFor artists\, art therapists and Steiner (Waldorf) teachers who want to deepen their understanding of colour (PD certificates available).\n\nWhen is it? \n3.00 pm-5.00 pm AEDT\, Saturdays\, 28 February-25 April 2026\nFive fortnightly sessions plus video recording \nCost \n$240 AUD\n$250 for PD certificate (75% attendance and participation required)\nVideo recordings included in the fee\, available for private study.\nThe payment options\, Zoom link\, and a list of materials will be sent to you after booking. \n\nBOOK HERE\n \n\n  \nFor more information \nThis course is a core component of Art as a Path of Schooling for the Soul. It is preceded by the introductory workshop\, Working with Colour\, Out of Colour. Together\, they provide a sound foundation in the anthroposophic (Steiner) approach to colour and painting. \n  \nContact \n  \nFeature image: New Life Emerges © Fiona Campbell 2010\n

SUMMARY:Surfaces as Interfaces to the Spirit
DESCRIPTION:  \n“…when we apply the lifeless paint to a surface\,\n we must get the light behind the surface. We must spiritualise\nthe surface and create a secret inner radiance.” \nRudolf Steiner \n  \nThis course explores the nature of painting as a coming-into-being experience that has the capacity to open our souls to the life of the cosmos. \nOne key difference between most modern art schools and the approach offered by Rudolf Steiner is that we make a clear distinction between drawing and painting\, between the qualities of the line and those of the surface. \nWhy is this so? What difference can it make to paint with surfaces rather than with lines? And what does this even mean? \nPainting is a two-dimensional art of coloured surfaces. If we work consciously with this thought\, work actively with this understanding\, our whole relationship to how we paint (as opposed to what we paint) is changed and transformed. \nWorking with transparent surfaces creates an interface to our inner world\, which in turn leads us to the threshold of our inner being – and beyond. In fact\, Steiner states that artists\, especially painters\, are already working at the threshold of consciousness. \nBut care must be taken! If we open ourselves too much to the spiritual world\, then we may be in danger of losing ourselves to it. Meditative verses can help us here\, so we will also work with appropriate meditations during the course. \nWho is it for? \n\nFor artists\, art therapists and art students seeking a path of soul/spiritual development through the arts.\nFor advanced participants of Art as a Path of Schooling for the Soul.\n\nRequired: watercolour wet-on-dry or veiling skills. This is not a demonstrated course so you must feel comfortable with your painting technique. \nDesirable: Working with Colour Moods or equivalent experience of working with watercolour painting. \nWhen is it? \nSaturdays 3pm-5pm AEDT\n7 March – 2 May 2026\nFortnightly classes plus recording \nCost \n$260 AUD\n$270 for PD certificate\nVideo recordings and other resources included in the fee. The payment options\, Zoom link\, and list of materials will be sent after booking. \n \n\nBook here!\n\n  \nFor more information \nThis course also a core component of Art as a Path of Schooling for the Soul.
